Fossil Evolution (Belgium) / Fossil Evolution - Biography
« on: November 19, 2015, 06:33:55 AM »
The story of Fossil Evolution started nearly 40 years ago when 5 young guys from East Flanders (Belgium) formed the band Isopoda. Nucleus of the band were the two brothers Dirk and Arnold De Schepper, Geert Amant (later succeeded by Luc van Hove), Marc Van Der Schueren and Walter De Berlangeer. The band were often referred to as the 'Belgian Genesis'. They released two albums between 1978 and 1982 before disbanding. In 2004 Isopoda reunited shortly for a couple of live concerts.

The reunion however was short lived although they kept in touch and in 2013 Isopoda reunited again. This time the band line-up was extended with two of the three sons of Arnold. Some months before, Arnold had started a band with his sons, Arne (drums), Maarten (guitar, keyboards, vocals) and Wouter (guitar, vocals). Luc Vanhove would have joined their band but he sadly passed away in 2013 and the line-up was completed by one of the boy’s school friends Pieter De Groeve (keyboards). Fossil Evolution was born.

The music of Fossil Evolution is based on the symphonic progressive rock of the 70's and the neo-progressive rock of the 80's. But the adolescents added their own influences to the music. The music is a beautiful blend of progressive rock with, pop, rock and jazz. The band started off live in a packed venue in their home town before writing and recording for their first album.

Originally intending to record an EP the band recorded 4 songs. After signing to their label it was decided that a full album was going to be released. 'World in Motion' was released on 24 October, 2014. The artwork is based on pictures made by guitarist Maarten and his mum Hilde. So you can say this is really a family album! The album consists of 5 original tracks and 1 fully reworked adaptation of the Isopoda classic 'Considering'.

Isopoda (Belgium) / Isopoda - Biography
« on: November 18, 2015, 04:19:48 PM »
Isopoda is one of the best prog bands Belgium ever had. The first time I got to know them was in 1978, with the release of the album Achrostichon.
Their music is very melodieus and with good vocals and a good musical base with guitar, flute and keyboard as the leading instruments.
Some critics say, that they are making music in the vein of Genesis and Camel.

Achrostichon contains 6 tracks:

1. Acrostichon (9:20)
2. The Muse (7:31)
3. Watch The Daylight Shine (5:19)
4. Don´t Do it The Easy Way (12:03)
5. Considering (7:58)
6. Male And Female (4:43)

The line-up for this album was as follows:

Geert Amant - keyboards, strings, backing vocals
Walter De Berlangeer - guitars, percussion, backing vocals
Arnold De Schepper - lead vocals on track 2 and 6, bass, guitars, percussion, flute, backing vocals
Dirk De Schepper - vocals & percussion
Guido Rubrecht - organ on track 2 and 6
William Souffreau - backing vocals on track 6
Marc van der Schueren - drums, percussion

A few weeks ago, Steve Hackett released 'Premonitions - The Charisma Recordings 1975-1983', a comprehensive reissue project that includes his first 6 albums on the Charisma label, together with a wealth of previously unavailable recordings as well as remixes by Steven Wilson. 'Premonitions' is released on 23rd October by Universal Music Catalogue/Virgin.

'Premonitions' comes in a Super Deluxe box set featuring a total of 135 songs on 10 CDs and 4 DVDs (5.1 mixes), plus an extensive booklet; included in this version are 67 previously unreleased recordings between old and new tracks, live and remixes.

"I'm pleased that Steven Wilson has done several new mixes in both surround and stereo" - Hackett has declared - "The box set will also contain a number of live shows from the era. I've enjoyed being involved with this comprehensive trip down memory lane. There's also a substantial booklet containing a lot of background info along with many wonderful Armando Gallo shots, and Roger Dean has painted a beautiful picture for the cover. For me it's a proud souvenir that highlights those years. I'll play plenty of this early work at shows in the autumn which will include some numbers not played live for many moons, like 'Icarus Ascending' and 'Star of Sirius' plus all time faves such as 'Every Day' and 'Spectral Mornings'."

Hackett's two most successful albums from the Charisma era, Please Don't Touch and Spectral Mornings, will also be re-released separately in a deluxe expanded version with 5.1 mixes by Steven Wilson in 2016. Both records were previously reissued in 2005 as expanded single disc sets.

2015 marks 40 years from the release of Steve Hackett's first solo record Voyage of the Acolyte; He was the first member of Genesis to release a solo album, before leaving the band in 1977. Hackett's musical career has been blooming over the past four decades, establishing him as a loved icon and pioneer of the genre. His current studio album Wolflight was released in March to critical acclaim, charting at 31; it's the first studio album of new material since Beyond the Shrouded Horizon in 2011 and explores past and contemporary cultures in a revolutionary journey.

The 40th anniversary celebrations continue with 19 UK shows on the 'Acolyte to Wolflight with Genesis Revisited Tour', where fans will have the opportunity to relive the Charisma years while discovering the guitarist's more recent work, together with a selection of Genesis tracks previously unheard live.

Steve Rothery (UK) / Steve Rothery Band (SRB) - Live in Rome
« on: October 30, 2015, 05:50:59 AM »
A while ago a friend of mine lended me his copy of the Steve Rothery Band Live in Rome 2CD/DVD-set.

Live in Rome features SRB during their second gig ever. Their first appearences was the Plovdiv gig from 2013, which is also available on CD/DVD.

Live in Rome is devided in three sets, with the first one being "The Ghosts Of Pripyat"-set, featuring six of the seven tracks from Steve´s solo album "The Ghosts Of Pripyat" runs for a little more than an hour. All the tracks are real nice instrumentals, with Steve Rothery in great shape. Luckely the music style is different from Steve´s Marillion works, but the guitar sound is very recognizable.

Steve is accompanied by some great musicians, being:

Riccardo Romano -keyboards
Dave Foster -guitar
Yatim Halimi -bass
Leon Parr - drums

The setlist contains:

1.Morpheus - 10:04
2.Kendris - 08:02
3.The Old Man Of The Sea - 12:14
4.White Pass - 11:40
5.Yesterdays's Hero - 11:03
6.Summer's End - 11:15

The only song missing from Steve´s album "The Ghosts Of Pripyat" is the title track itself.

The second set is a short set of Marillion songs played by the Steve Rothery Band, with the addition of Manuela Milanese (vocals on Waiting To Happen & Sugar Mice) and
Allessandro Carmassi  (vocals on Afraid Of Sunlight, Easter). This set runs for around 21 minutes on the DVD and 27 minutes on the CD.

Manuela Milanese is new to me, but she has a real nice voice (with a slight Italian accent), which fits in perfectly in Waiting To Happen & Sugar Mice.

Alessandro Carmassi is the vocalist of a Marillion tribute band called Neverland, so he´s is used to sing the Marillion. He does a real good job on Afraid Of Sunlight and Easter.

The tracklist of this set is as follows:

1.Waiting To Happen - 06:20
2.Afraid Of Sunlight - 07:12
3.Easter - 07:21
4.Sugar Mice - 06:06 (CD-only)

The third and last set consists of three songs played by the Italian prog band RanestRane, with the addition of Steve Rothery on guitar. Riccardo Romano, who is playing keyboards with the Steve Rothery Band, is the keyboardplayer of RanestRane, so that explains the contribution of this Italian band.

This set consists of Marillion´s "Cinderella Search" and two songs from RanestRane. This set runs for approx. 18 minutes.

The tracklist of this set is as follows:

1.Cinderella Search - 06:40
2.Materna Luna - 07:46
3.Monolith pt. 2 - 03:47

Overal this is a real nice release. At some points the camerawork looks a bit amateurish and unfortunately there is no 5.1 surroundmix.

But I must say, I really like this one.

Caravan (UK) / Caravan - Biography
« on: October 24, 2015, 06:35:58 AM »
A short biography, copied from the original post by Melo the Prog Goddess.

Caravan was formed in Canterbury, England in 1968 by Pye Hastings (guitar/ vocals), Dave Sinclair (keyboards), Richard Sinclair (bass/ vocals) and Richard Coughlan (drums). The four had previously played at various times with a local band, The Wilde Flowers, which also featured Kevin Ayers and future Soft Machine members Robert Wyatt and Hugh Hopper.

Caravan was the first UK act to sign with American label MGM/ Verve and their debut album, entitled 'Caravan' was released late in 1968. It was favourably received by the critics and the debut single, Place of My Own was described as having a 'gripping compulsion' with 'scintillating organ work'. John Peel played the album regularly on his radio show 'Top Gear'.

A second album saw a move from Verve, as they had closed down their rock/pop division and Decca took up the cause. September 1970 was the release date for 'If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You'. At this time relationships within the band were strong. They got on well and they looked on course to succeed as a band.

Still together as a unit, the band recorded 'In the Land of Grey and Pink' which was released in September 1971. By now a loyal fan base was developing and they were playing some prestigious gigs, for example in front of 250,000 in Rotterdam. The album was described as 'virtually faultless' and the band looked set fair for national and international recognition. At this crucial point, Dave Sinclair decided to leave. As Pye Hastings explained, 'Dave was developing faster than the rest of us and I think he was getting frustrated at seeing other bands of dubious talent getting greater financial reward. The management must have been beside themselves: the band were getting somewhere, a new album is released and the main player decides he is off.'

Steve Miller came in as a replacement for Dave: he had been recommended to Richard Sinclair by Phil, Steve's guitarist brother. This line up did not go down so well with fans who saw a change to a jazzier feel based around Steve's piano- orientated keyboards. This style dominated the next album release, Waterloo Lily, released in May 1972. No longer was Dave's unique keyboard sound- based around his Hammond organ- in evidence. Even Pye's older brother Jimmy Hastings appeared to be surplus to requirements, appearing only on 'Love in Your Eye' on sax and flute, the bulk of this work going to Lol Coxhill.

It was no surprise when the line up disbanded, leaving Pye Hastings and Richard Coughlan to pick up the pieces and decide whether to carry on. A change of direction resulted with the addition of Geoffrey Richardson on viola. The line up was completed by Welshman Stu Evans on bass and the well travelled Derek Austin on Keyboards. No album was released by this version of Caravan, although they toured extensively, including a series of dates in Australia, accompanying Slade, Lindisfarne and Status Quo. The reissue of this album on Universal in 2001 does include versions with the Evans/ Austin line up, including a completely new track, 'Derek's Long Thing'.
