Ad Infinitum (USA) / Ad Infinitum - Biography
« on: July 17, 2016, 07:57:10 AM »
A short Bio on Ad Infinitum by Melo the Prog Goddess, taken from the old forum:

Ad Infinitum means "to infinity" in Latin, but in the four years it took to write, arrange, record, re-record, mix and master this debut album, there were times when it appeared it was going to take that long before it was finished!

Around 1993, Todd Braverman was getting restless, having just ended his relationship with Cathedral. Kinesis had just released the second Cathedral disc, There In The Shadows, and he felt it was time to move on to his own creative outlet. Then Ad Infinitum was conceived.

The underlying premise for Ad Infinitum was to recreate an early 70"s progressive rock album. As guitarist Craig Wall puts it: "We found that many neo-prog bands write great music, but don"t have that sound, talented vocalists, or write memorable songs. In other words, we wanted to write extended songs with memorable melodies and interesting arrangements, but use traditional prog sounds. In our opinion, what separates the classic prog groups from the others is that they wrote songs, not virtuosic displays merely to impress other musicians. Being aficionados of the old school ways, we wanted to hear more traditional prog sounds like Mellotrons, Hammond organs, Moogs, beautifully structured 12-string acoustic guitar duets and, most of all, songs again. Hey, just because it clocks in at 8:29, doesn"t mean it can"t have a logical song structure to hang all that musical virtuosity on.ā?¯

Craig made a call to Todd sometime back in 1994 to answer an ad Todd had posted in the Village Voice for a co-writer and guitarist. Before Craig had the chance to meet him, Todd drilled him on his knowledge of prog rock by bringing up obscure references to bands Craig had been listening to since he was 12 years old, always trying to sneak one in to stump him. But after a month of their prog banter and what seemed like a fairly elongated screening period, Todd mentioned something about a flower and Craig just said casually, "A flower?ā?¯ Todd immediately picked up the Genesis Supper"s Ready reference and the next words out of his mouth were, "When can you come over?"

Wishbone Ash (UK) / Wishbone Ash - Biography
« on: July 16, 2016, 06:21:57 PM »
A short Bio on Wishbone Ash by Melo the Prog Goddess:

During the early- and mid-'70s, Wishbone Ash were among England's most popular hard rock acts. The group's roots dated to the summer of 1966, when drummer Steve Upton formed a band called Empty Vessels with bassist/vocalist Martin Turner and guitarist Glen Turner. Empty Vessels soon changed their name to Tanglewood and moved to London; during a gig at the Country Club in Hampstead, they were seen by would-be rock manager Miles Copeland, who was impressed with the jazz and progressive rock influences within the band and offered to be their manager.

Glen Turner left the band at that point, and an advertisement for a guitarist resulted in the addition of both David Alan "Ted" Turner and Andy Powell, who provided the basis for the sound of the new lineup with intertwining riffs and phrases drawn from both soul and blues, coupled with Martin Turner's melodic bass sound and Upton's jazz-influenced drumming. A new name was called for, and after several suggestions by Copeland that proved unacceptable, "Wishbone Ash" was chosen from two lists of words. The group rehearsed for weeks at Copeland's home, working out an entirely new repertoire, and played their first gig opening for the Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation. It wasn't too long before they were opening for Deep Purple, where a sound check jam between Powell and Ritchie Blackmore led to a recording contract with the American Decca label.

Their self-titled first album appeared in 1970; Pilgrimage and Argus followed over the next two years, and each showed a major advance in the band's sound. The release of 1973's Wishbone Four reflected a greater maturity to the group, and was their first fully developed album, with songwriting that didn't hide behind a progressive pose but luxuriated in the members' folk music inclinations, without compromising the harder edge of their music. The album also saw the departure of Ted Turner, who was replaced by Laurie Wisefield.

Locked In and New England followed; Martin Turner departed after 1979's Just Testing, to be replaced by ex-King Crimson bassist/singer John Wetton. Wishbone Ash soldiered on through the 1980s, and in 1986 even got back with Copeland, by now a major player in the recording industry by virtue of his management of the Police and his founding of I.R.S. Records. Wishbone Ash's history came full circle with the reunion of Powell, Upton, Ted Turner, and Martin Turner, and the recording of three albums for I.R.S.. They remained a working band into the 1990s, led by Andy Powell and Ted Turner and touring and recording regularly. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide

« on: July 09, 2016, 07:39:10 AM »
In September 2015, Ayreon's legendary progressive rock concept album 'The Human Equation' was brought to life as a full-blown musical production at the Nieuwe Luxor theater in Rotterdam.

This limited run of performances was witnessed by die-hard fans from across the world, but now Arjen Lucassen's story can be witnessed by all, as a recording of the final night of those special evenings is being released as both a DVD & Blu-Ray package, subtitled in nine different languages and including nearly one-and-a-half hours of bonus content.

'The Theater Equation' show stars Dream Theater frontman James Labrie in his original roll as “Me” and features nearly the entire cast of vocalists from the original 2004 album. The main cast is supported by a specially put-together 19-strong Epic Rock Choir. This is a unique document of an undertaking that was surely once in a lifetime.

Agitation Free (D) / Agitation Free - Biography
« on: July 09, 2016, 07:05:24 AM »
A short bio written by Melo the Prog Goddess:

The band AGITATION FREE emerged in 1967 from the fusion of two Berlin rock groups. Towards the end of 1967 the quartet, which initially had mainly played coverversions before developing lengthy improvisations, experimented on stage with psychedelic novelty visuals similar to those of Californian underground bands of the same era like Jefferson Airplane or Iron Butterfly. Soon the band, which in the early days had Christopher Franke (later of Tangerine Dream-fame) drumming, was hailed as one of Berlins most interesting groups. After some Iine-up changes Agitation Free in 1970 performed on the "First German Progressive Popfestival" at the "Berliner Sportpalast". In April 1972 the band, now a quintet formed by Lutz Ulbrich, Michael GĆ¼nther, Jƶrg Schwenke, Michael Hoenig and Burghard Rausch, was invited by the Goethe-Institute to embark on a tour of Egypt, Lebanon, Cyprus and Greece. The varied impressions from that trip resulted in the first Iongplay ,,Malesch", a fascinating conglomerate comprised of exotic sound recordings from the Near East journey and a good deal of "Krautrock".

Extensive concert activities made the band increasingly popular throughout Europe. In 1972 they appeared on the music festival of the summer Olympics in Munich. Early 1973 saw the group touring through France, before participating in the "German Rock Super Concert" in Frankfurt in May. During the same year they produced their next album "2 nd " and afterwards toured through Germany's bigger towns. Public stations SFB and WDR broadcasted portraits and concerts of AGITATION FREE. In 1974 symptoms of fatigue became obvious within the band, resulting in its split after a farewell concert.

In retrospective it becomes clear that AGITATION FREE with its openness to constant experimentation was one of the most important groups of the so called "Berlin School" and also a career catalyst for many musicians. Christopher Franke helped Tangerine Dream to become globally respected. Michael Hoenig worked with Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream and recorded a solo album before establishing himself as a soundtrack composer in Hollywood. Axel Genrich joined Guru Guru, Burghard Rausch cofounded BeI Ami. Gust Lütjens toured with Shirley Bassey and later attracted a huge following with his New Age act Living Mirrors in the US. Lutz ,,Lüül" Ulbrich joined Ashra, worked with former Velvet Underground-singer Nico, produced soloalbums as well as music for theatre productions and is nowadays successfull with his group 17 Hippies.

In 1998, almost 25 years after their split, the former AGITATION FREE members Ubrich, Lütjens, Günther and Rausch met at the birthday bash of founding member Lutz "LüüI" Ulbrich and spontaneously decided to revive AGITATION FREE. In early summer of 1999 the new AGITATION FREE album "River Of Return", produced by former SpIiff-guitarist Potsch Potschka, was released by BSC Music. The new music connects smoothly with the experimental earlier sound of the group, often flowing in meditative moods just to explode surprisingly in powerful rock. In the near future AGITATION FREE will play live at some festivals and some selcted gigs in winter 1999 together with keyboarder Michael Hoenig. Thus the story of one of Germanys most interesting rockbands continues in a contemporary manner.
