The month following Woodstock they began working on their next album. Before the album was released, they had to make a goodwill tour to East Europe, because Clayton-Thomas who was a Canadian citizen didn't have a green card. The members didn't like the idea of making a goodwill tour for the Nixon-administration but they had no choice if they wanted to keep Clayton-Thomas in the band. The tour was a major disaster. On the fist night, in Bucharest, the young Romanian audience jumped to its feet and shouted "USA". The Police responded by loosing attack German shepherds on the audience. The communist government gave orders to B,S&T, " more jazz ...less rhythm".

After the return from the tour, their third album, "Blood, Sweat & Tears 3", struck gold upon it's release. The album contained a lot of high points, such as Goffin-King's "Hi-De-Ho", Laura Nyro's "He's A Runner", Traffic's "40,000 Headmen" and Clayton-Thomas' "Lucretia MacEvil" along with one of Steve Katz finest songs, "The Battle". On the album was also a version of Jagger-Richards' "Sympathy for the Devil", with an arrangement by Dick Halligan. "Hi-De-Ho" was released as a single and reached #14 in the charts. Jazz magazines praise their precision, their arrangements, and their musicianship. Contrary, rock critics call the group "slick and inflexible". Clayton-Thomas replied to the criticism."This band does more free blowing on stage than practically any rock band, but we do it within a very literate and educated framework. A lot of people say, it sounds so precise. Well that's the way these guys play. If you go to Juiliard for five or six years, you learn to play precisely." In September, "Lucretia MacEvil" was released as the next single and peaked at #29 in the charts. November saw the group play its first concert with a full symphony in New Orleans. They also recorded music for a Barbra Steisand, George Segal movie, "The Owl and the Pussycat".

In January 1971, the group begin recording its next release in San Francisco. They recruited jazz writer/saxman/composer Don Heckman to co-produce. The sessions seem to drag on, with takes mounting up to the dozens. In a brief break from the recording, Blood, Sweat & Tears became one of the first rock bands to play Las Vegas, for which they received a lot of criticism. The band was charged with being hollow and pretentious, swapping its original rock audience for older, cabaret-oriented listeners. They were called a"lounge act" and that they had sold their soul for the money.

Back in the studio again, they ask Al Kooper to come and help out with the album. Kooper, Colomby and Roy Halee co-produced the rest of the album. "B,S&T 4" was released at the end of June and it's the first album with mostly original tunes. It turns gold in a month. This time even the rock critics are impressed. Two singles are released from the album, "Go Down Gamblin'" and "Lisa, Listen To Me", neither of which do well on the pop charts.

Now they started searching for a new singer. Laura Nyro, who happened to be dating Jim Fielder at the time, was invited to a rehearsal, but she decided not to join the band. Steven Stills was also approached, but he was busy working with Al Kooper and Mike Bloomfield on the "Super Sessions" album.

Bobby Colomby then told the others of a virtually unknown singer named David Clayton-Thomas, and convinced them that his Blues-tinged style seemed perfect for the band. Clayton-Thomas had some hits in Canada with "the Bossmen" and sang briefly with a band called "Flying Machine".

Born in Surrey, England, on Sept. 13th, 1941 as David Henry Thomsett of British-Canadian parents, the family moved to Toronto, Canada when he was age six. David had a troubled adolescence and was jailed a half-dozen times for vagrancy, parole violations and petty theft. While other teenagers in suburban Toronto were attending high school proms, David was a street kid, a loner, sleeping in parked cars, stealing food and clothing, learning how to survive and fight behind bars. When he was at Millbrook Reformatory he learned to play the guitar. An old guitar had been left behind by an outgoing inmate, and David claimed it. He began to practice alone, late into the night, and for the first time in his life he had a dream, a plan for the future. After his release, David made music his life, and steadily honed his skills in one band after another until Blood, Sweat and Tears approached him in 1969.

The band also hired James William Guercio to produce their next album. If their first effort was a loose jazz blending melted together with rock, this album had a clearer delineation between jazz and rock. Straight-ahead rock songs and a jazzy part in the middle of each song. This was the formula that really did catch the fancy of the public. The album was released on December 11 1968 and launched three gold singles, "You've Made Me So Very Happy," "And When I Die" and "Spinning Wheel". The L.P. garnered five Grammy awards, including Album of the Year and Best Performance by a Male Vocalist. Suddenly B,S&T were as big as any band could be. Offers poured in for major concerts, TV appearances and jazz and rock festivals from coast to coast. They even played at the original Woodstock Festival.

For a brief period at the end of the '60s and the start of the '70s, Blood, Sweat & Tears , which fused a rock & roll rhythm section to a horn section, held out the promise of a jazz-rock fusion that could storm the pop charts. The band was organized in New York in 1967 out of the remnants of the Blues Project by keyboard player/singer Al Kooper and guitarist Steve Katz of that group and saxophonist Fred Lipsius . The rhythm section consisted of bassist Jim Fielder and drummer Bobby Colomby and the horn section was filled out by trumpeters Randy Brecker and Jerry Weiss and trombonist Dick Halligan .

Al Kooper came up with the name when he was on the phone with a promoter, while gazing at a Johnny Cash album cover. The album was called, "Blood Sweat & Tears". The inspiration for the band name did not come from Winston Churchill's quote, "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat", as was widely reported at the time. Their first gig was at the Village Theater (which later became the Fillmore East) as the opening act for the James Cotton Blues band.

A couple of weeks later the band opened for Moby Grape at the Cafe A Go Go. They were a huge success and three record labels were willing to sign the group. They decided to sign Columbia, a label that Kooper already had a relation-ship with. In December 1967 they began recording their first album "Child Is Father To The Man", which was released on February 21 1968. The critics loved it and compared it to the Beatles "Sgt. Pepper" and the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds". The album was considered as a mile stone in rock music and was awarded a Grammy nomination, but only hit # 47 in the charts.

Al Kooper began working on the next BS&T album, searching for songs for follow-up material. On the first album, Kooper was given free hands to do what he could for BS&T. On the second album Katz and Colomby wanted to take a more active part in the development of the band and both of them wanted to get a new, better, stronger vocalist. After meeting with Kooper he decided to leave the band after their last gig at the Garrick Theatre in New York. Also Randy Brecker left the band to join the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Band. He was replaced by Chuck Winfield. Jerry Weiss left as well, his place being taken by Lew Soloff. Dick Halligan took over the organ and Jerry Hyman was added on trombone.

Blood, Sweat & Tears was an American music group, formed in 1967 in New York City. It fused rock, blues, pop music, horn arrangements and jazz improvisation into a hybrid that came to be known as "jazz-rock".

And then there were no more hits… In 1978, drummer Van der Kleij was the first to leave, followed shortly by bassist Theo Hurts. They were replaced by Appie Tamboer and ex-Focus bassist Bert Ruiter (Jerney's new boyfriend) respectively.  The band didn’t play live much anymore, at the end of the 70s, and the demos for the new album were rejected by Jaap Eggermont, their producer. Earth and Fire then proceeded to switch their record labels from Polydor to Vertigo, with which they recorded and released 1979’s "Reality Fills Fantasy", produced by Gerrit Jan Leenders.
This album, which was once deemed by Eggermont as "not having enough commercial potential", became the band’s greatest succes to date!  The single, "Weekend", hit the top of the charts and stayed at No.1 for weeks, in several countries!

However, in early 1980, Chris Koerts left the band.  His position was taken by Ronnie Meyes (previously with Brainbox). With him in the fold, the band recorded their significantly less successful "Andromeda Girl" (1981), but the followup, "In A State of Flux" (1982), scored fairly big!  On this album, the group returned to their funkier roots. 
It combined punchy, concise, melodic rock with some symphonic arrangements, at last making an overdue comeback.  "Twenty Four Hours", a song by Gerard Koerts, subsequently became a hit. The Spring of 1983 saw Earth and Fire reduced to a trio.  Meyes went on to join The Millionnaires, Tamboer, and Het Goede Doel.

The band finally split up at this stage, and didn’t reform until 1987, with Ton Scherpenzeel (ex-Kayak) to record the powerful and popular comeback album "Phoenix" (1989), featuring the hit single, "French Word for Love". Meanwhile, brothers Koerts released an all-instrumental new age album, "Frames" (88).

A short Bio on Earth & Fire, adapted from OOR's First Dutch Pop Encyclopedia.

The group Earth and Fire (originally Opus Gainfull) was founded in 1968 in the Hague by the Koerts twins, Chris (vocals, guitar; ex-Swinging Strings) and Gerard (guitar and keyboards, also ex-Swinging Strings); bassist Hans Ziech (ex-Soul), drummer Cees Kalis, and Lisette on vocals.

All of them had had prior experience in music. Lisette soon became ill and had to leave the band; she was replaced by Jerney Kaagman in 1969.  Kaagman had only sung in school bands prior to joining.  Kalis was also replaced - by Ton van der Kleij (drums, ex-Summer) - in the following year. 
It was this line up of the band that supported Golden Earring on their tour. (George Kooymans landed Golden Earring their first hit in January 1970 with "Seasons".)  With Chris Koerts as the principal songwriter, the band forged ahead with new original material. "Ruby is the one" and "Wild and exiting" became enormous hits in the group’s homeland.
Their newfound success instantly brought so many booking requests that the band decided to turn professional.  An unbreakable string of very successful hits followed with "Invitation" (71), "Storm and Thunder" (71), "Memories" (72), "Maybe Tomorrow Maybe Tonight" (73), "Love of Life" (74), "Only Time Will Tell" (75), "Thanks For The Love" (75), "What Difference Does It Make" (76) and "7, 8th Avenue" (77), as the fans noticed the group's material deviating from the hard-edged progressive rock sound towards mainstream 70s pop.

The band’s early hit singles were distinguished by the heavy use of mellotron, and they are generally considered to be the best of the bunch in Holland, and abroad. With later LPs, Earth and Fire lost some of their charm, compared to the earlier days, by sounding increasingly more poppy, mainstream, and pretentious, thus gradually losing most of their popularity towards 1977. However, through the years, the band evolved, rather than lost its identity.

Loom, being Jerome Froese, Johannes Schmoelling and Robert Waters are currently working on a second Loom album.

On their website they unvealed a little secret about the forthcoming , being a collaboration with Irish singer and harpist Moya Brennan.

I´m very curious how this combination might sound. Looking forward to this future release.

Vernissage in Berlin - Commemorating the first Anniversary of Edgar's death:

On Saturday, 30 January 2016 Bianca (Edgar's wife) likes to invite you to a Vernissage on the occasion of the first Anniversary of Edgar's death.

This event will take place in Berlin and includes a special concert with Thorsten Quaeschning (as Picture Palace Music), Ulrich Schnauss and Hoshiko Yamane and their solo projects.

Bianca will present many of Edgar's so-called Zoom-O-Graphics (photo collages), partly in big formats as well as her DANTE series she painted for TD's scoring of the Dante Trilogy (Inferno - Purgatorio - Paradiso).

The whole event shall benefit Bianca's idea of establishing a modern and interactive Tangerine Dream Sound Museum in the near future (location: Berlin).

More details about this wonderful and meaningful project will follow closer to the event.

2. Edgar's Autobiography

As we already told you in our last newsletter Bianca, Edgar's wife, took over the book project of her husband now and will finish his work during the next months, so there is a mountain of work ahead.... Thanks very much in advance for your kind understanding that she will need time to put together this important book. In any case she plans to release it in 2015.

At the same time she would like to ask some fans who shot nice pics from Edgar and the band - especially during the 70ies and 80ies - if they would be prepared to make them available for the book, of course those fans would be credited in the book in case we would use their pics. Please just send a mail to - many thanks in advance for your support.

3. New Releases

Of course we are working on a special tribute album as mentioned above, but before we would like to release the London concert of 2014 (Phaedra Farewell Tour) as Blu-ray. This concert was one of the first concerts on the Farewell tour last May and many British fans as well as fans from all over the world enjoyed this special concert at O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire very much. We hope to finish this film project by the end of this month and release it by mid May of this year.

In the last weeks many of you asked for Edgar's solo album "ORANGE LIGHT YEARS" (double CD, compilation) which was out of stock for some time and we like to inform you that this CD will be in stock again from 22nd April on - including a new reworked mastering.

1. Message from Bianca, Thorsten, Ulrich & Hoshiko

Hi everyone,

It's still not easy to address some words to you as we all do miss Edgar immensely.....
But we think we owe you an explanation why we have decided to continue working together despite the painful loss of Edgar.

On numerous occasions over the past months Edgar explained his vision for what was to become the first album of the 'Quantum Years'. Some of the changes he suggested were rather radical ones, others more aiming towards an evolutionary progression of what's been there already.

As a consequence we (Edgar, Thorsten and Ulrich) had already begun working on material for this project - the initial plan was to get together at some point during the first half of this year and to create a joint record on the basis of those ideas.
It'll be the greatest challenge since we started making music to finish this project without Edgar's physical presence but due to the instructions he has already given us and the sketches he recorded, we feel that we should at least try to realize Edgar's vision.

We assure you that we'll do our best to produce a result that is as close as possible to what he would've wanted it to be.
We're also grateful that Peter Baumann (ex-member of TD) has agreed to support us with this project - he'll even be present during the 2nd half of a longer recording session that's currently been scheduled for this April.

Again, we're fully aware of the extreme challenge that this task represents - but we're also hoping that we'll manage to come up with a result that will satisfy Edgar - and you.

  • Famed ex-Tangerine Dream musician Peter Baumann has posted the following comment on the ZEST facebook group page: 
"Hallo everyone - as all of you I was shocked by Edgar's sudden departure. Just a month ago I visited him in Austria making plans for a new project. Well, there will be a new project, and Edgar's fingerprints will be all over it. His personality will permeate everything that is composed/produced under the TD name."

  • Ex-Tangerine Dream man Peter Baumann has posted the following message to FaceBook:

Thank you all for your kind comments. I'm just now sitting in a plane returning from Austria after meeting with Bianca and the TD crew. After many, many years, last October I felt compelled to return to making music - that's when I contacted Edgar and visited him in Austria in early January - those were some of the most emotional and intense days in my life. We're now in the midst of planing the next phase of TD, I believe it will be magical!
