Plackband (NL) / Plackband - Biography
« on: January 06, 2016, 07:58:33 AM »
I found a short Plackband biography on Prog Archives:

Halfway the Seventies the Dutch progrock formation Plackband was founded with this line-up:

Kees Bik (vocals, Mellotron)
Ronald Brautigam (guitar and vocals)
Michel van Wassem (keyboards and vocals)
Albert de Keijzer (bass and Moog-pedals)
Tom van der Meulen (drums and percussion)

The Plackband were local heroes, but gradually they became more and more known and the Plackband even appeared on the national Dutch radio. Unfortunately musical disputes lead to the demise in 1982. Until then they never got the opportunity to record an album, only a single entitled "Seventy Warriors/Some Party" (from 1978, nowadays a collectors item).

In 2000 the Plackband reunited and released in the original line-up the live-CD "The Lost Tapes", including all their best songs. Two years later the Plackband released the album "After The Battle" and a single entitled "Remember Forever", including the new title track and the two songs from the single "Seventy Warriors".
The sound of the Plackband is a tribute to mid-Genesis, very warm, melodic and with strong vocal harmonies, lush keyboards and powerful guitarwork. In 2004 singer Kees Bik was replaced by Karel Messemaker, who knew Ronald and Michel from the Dutch formation "November", the successor of the Plackband.

In 2009 the Plackband were reincarnated as PBII featuring original members Tom van der Meulen, Ronald Brautigam, and Michel Van Wassem with a debut CD release in 2010.

The London concert of the PHAEDRA FAREWELL TOUR 2014 on 23rd May at O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire was the second concert in a row of a long multi-week tour after starting in Paris.
This DVD once again reflects the typical and especially warm welcome of our British TD fans during a Tangerine Dream concert in London - as Edgar often named as "TD's home."
It was the last time for the band performing as a five man/woman band - Iris and Linda still were present.

After that tour TD started the so-called QUANTUM YEARS with three concerts in Australia as a four man/woman band with the new member Ulrich Schnauss.

Enjoy this special concert as a very good mixture of classic and earlier TD tracks, at the same time this DVD is a wonderful memory of one of the last concerts with the mastermind of TD Edgar Froese.

A small addition by Walt Nektroid taken from the old forum:

2004 saw the departure of various band members to persue other interests and projects including Jonathan's "Panic Room" and Anne-Marie's solo career. An era drew to a close.

A chance meeting with keyboard player Gonzalo Carrera, considered by many to be one of the finest keyboard players working in the UK today, culminated in a series of writing sessions in London and Swansea. Gonzalo will be known to many of you through his work with David O'List (The Nice), John Helliwell (Supertramp), Glen Cornick (Jethro Tull) and Landmarq.

Soon two became four - we were joined by superb drummer Bob Dalton and virtuoso rock guitarist Nick May, both of whom need little introduction. Bob is well known as the drummer with It Bites and has recently toured with Kino. Nick was guitarist with The Enid and has worked with various other bands including Jadis. Nick has just released his debut solo album 'Whimwise' .

Four became five when we were introduced to the wonderful Mexican vocalist, composer and synthesist Alquimia. Singing in various languages such as Spanish, English, French and her native idiom Nahuatl, Alquimia has released several albums and collaborated and performed with many other artists such as Michael Nyman, Jah Wobble and Hans Joachim Roedelius.

There is an incredible synergy within the band allowing us to create exciting new music which is simply 'classic Karnataka'.

A new era has begun!"

2003 - Delicate Flame Of Desire

'This much anticipated new release begins an ambitious new chapter that makes for a compelling listening experience. Sensual, spiritual and unrestrained by musical boundaries, the dramatic, multi-layered arrangements combine with haunting vocal melodies to create a powerful and epic work where panoramic soundscapes give way to fragile moments of acoustic intimacy. From the evolving intensity of Heart Of Stone to the desolate imagery of Out Of Reach, this is an album which embraces the agony and ecstasy of the delicate flame of desire.'

For their new studio album 'Delicate Flame Of Desire', Karnataka teamed up with highly regarded Warner/Chappell producer Steve Evans and engineer Joe Gibb (whose work includes Catatonia's ' International Velvet' and Leftfield's 'Leftism') to create an outstanding work of exceptionally strong, melodic songs with dynamic and evocative symphonic arrangements set against a highly polished production.

A short Bio by Melo the Prog Goddess taken from the old forum:

Formed in the late 1990s, Karnataka have emerged as one of the UK's most innovative new rock bands. Unrestrained by musical boundaries, the dramatic, multi-layered soundscapes created by the band combine with haunting vocal melodies to take the listener on an inspirational journey.

The band's first two albums ('Karnataka' 1998, 'The Storm' 2000) have attracted a growing worldwide audience and gained considerable attention from all aspects of the music media, including radio, magazine and internet features in Europe, Asia and the Americas. In the UK Karnataka have received the recognition they deserve with Best New Band (2000) and Best Female Vocalist (Rachel Jones for an unprecedented 3 years running in 2000, 2001 & 2002) awards from the Classic Rock Society. 'The Storm' was featured as Album Of The Week on BBC Radio Wales and has received repeated airplay on the Bob Harris Radio 2 show.

Karnataka have built up a reputation as an outstanding live band and they continue to bring their music to a wider audience with constant touring in the UK and abroad. Their performances continue to garner rave reviews - the band received the Classic Rock Society's Gig Of The Year award for 2001.

Their extensive touring has included prestigious European concerts with Porcupine Tree and culminated in the release of their live DVD " Karnataka - Live in Concert ", filmed at London's Mean Fiddler and premiered at Planet Hollywood in the capital's West End. The band have recently performed in the USA at an acoustic concert in Manhattan and also at the Patriots Theatre in New Jersey at The Classic Rock Festival. The latter concert was filmed for release in 2003 on DVD.
