I've only ever heard The Lord of the Rings.
I think I'll have to look out for Magician's Hat.

Have not listened to that album but "Lord of the Rings" is magnificient ! Completely in a different class than the "official" music for the music - as my personal opinion. I am rating Bo Hansson's album very high - as one of the best theme Prog albums ever  :worship: ... that has probably something to do with liking the book, too

I bought the Lord of the Rings LP when I was a a teenager basically because I saw in a record shop in Chelmsford & was blown away by the cover ! (different cover than the CD has, featured a winged Nazgul over Orthanc). I had never heard of Bo Hansson at the time. To be honest I didn't "get it" on the first few play throughs, but I persisted with it on the grounds that if this was inspired by LoTR - it has to be good !!! Eventually I "got it". Fantastic, what a piece of Art!

It has to be one of the most atmospheric pieces of music I own! - I think he captured the feel of Middle Earth brilliantly & whilst I like the film music, this is far more what I believe JRR himself would have had in mind ! :worship:

I also own Magicians Hat !! AND Attic Thoughts !! !But still looking out for Watership Down.

LoTR is certainly his best IMHO but the other 2 I have are worth a listen

Nice to see that there are many Bo Hansson fans in here. I think that I heard the music well before reading the book

Another Bo Hansson fan here:
Have:
Lord of the rings on LP and CD (remastered)
Magicians hat on cassette-tape and CD (remastered)
Attic thoughts on LP and CD (remastered)
Watership down on LP
El-ahrairah on LP (tihs is Watership Down with a different cover and different song-titles, even a different number of songs, but the same music)

A colleague at work past me a copy of the September issue of Classic Rock Mag because it had a feature on Prog & he knew me to be a fan. I had a quick flick through and found that the mag had the following to say about Hanssons LoTR album.

?As anyone who?s read JRR Tolkien or seen the films will know, there?s nothing small-scale about Lord of the Rings. Yet Sewdish keyboardist Bo Hansson?s interpretation is so restrained and underwhelming, he might as well have been composing the score to an episode of Where the Heart is. Despite the potential drama of songs such as Lothlorian and Shadowfax. Hansson witters away on his moog, evoking none of the atmosphere of the books whatoever. Precious? Not in the slightest. Later, Hansson would release an album inspired by Watership down. Hobbits, rabbits?it?s all the same to us?.

 :loo: :loo: :loo:

I will admit that the album takes a while to get into, but if you are going to comment about something, then you should at least give it a few listens. Contrary to what they say I personally think the Hansson captures the Tolkien atmosphere brilliantly. In fact in exactly the same way as the film doesn?t ! I do like the film music, but it doesn?t compare to the genius of Hansson?s work IMO.

I suppose the guy who wrote this only knew Lord of the Rings from the movie, which is perhaps a bit overblown. I like the movie though, but I hardly know any music inspired by Lord of the Rings which is as good as Bo Hanssons work. There is a Dutch composer, who wrote something for a brass-orchestra which is quite good, but I don't feel underwelmed by Bo Hanssons take on the book. I think the music is very dramatic, though perhaps more subtile as the reviewer had expected.

I agree ... the only other LOTR-inspired music i truly love is Par Lindh's "Dreamsongs from Middle Earth" :winkle:

Well, I do not think that the critic has even read the books - based on his review. Maybe he cannot read, he just watches films and listens to their ordinary hollywood-style-music. A "Classic Rock" reviewer who actually likes film music - without daring to openly admit that ...?!  Not a very credible critic, I dare say.

Sorry for my rant but the perspective of the review is so twisted that it does not make any sense (and I happen to hate ordinary film music ... it is so pompous and meaningless in my ears - well, normally - on the otherhand Shostakovitch-type-of-music in Batman movies is something else  ... well, there goes my Prog credibility ).

There is some film music I really like, like the stuff Klaus Doldinger wrote for 'Das Boot'.

But I don't think I have a big prog crediblity. I like a lot non prog stuff.

Bo Hansson's music is amazing... the person who wrote that obviously has not a clue what an ass he has made of himself... :damn:
