Omega

(1/1)

ObiwanKenomi:
The most successful Hungarian rock band in history, OMEGA is one of the rare bands to have been known outside in his country. The legend has it that as albums were released in other countries it became necessary to brake the language barrier. Their music is a combination of Eastern European prog with a bit of symphonic and a bit of psyche prog. The result is a dark orchestrated sound combined with extended improvisation. Their discography actually starts in the early 60's, and goes in till today in a more modern register. Several albums were released in Hungarian as well as English. I'd prefer the "accented" English version of the albums. The more so, the music remains the same...

I remember hearing them for the first time on a Dutch radio show. Beautifull music, but the vocals were in Hungarian, not a language I learned on High School. It was a bit strange but somehow I liked their music.
My local record store could lay it's hands on a few copies of one of the recent albums and soon they were popular within a small group of people who listened through those strange vocals. The album was called
Nem Tudom a Neved which means as much as "I don't know your name", at least so we were told.
Soon this album was followed by a few other Hungarian releases, but a few month later English versions appeared. One of the first English albums I bought was Skyrover. I have to say, it was a bit strange to hear them sing in English.
Later I bought a copy of the double live album Live at the Kisstadion and of The Hall of Floaters in the Sky.

If you get a chance to listen to their music, give it a try. A great band from behind the Iron Curtain, at least in those days.
